PROVISIONALLY REGISTERED TEACHERS (PRTs)

Rationale

Provisionally Registered Teachers require guidance and support from an experienced and proficient tutor teacher. This will last for at least 2 years and will aim to ensure PRTs are meeting the Registered Teacher Criteria by the end of the period of support.

PURPOSES


  1. To guide and support the provisionally registered teacher so that he/she has the opportunity to attain the Registered Teacher Criteria and Professional Standards.


  1. To ensure a relevant structured advice and guidance programme (see appx I) is in place, for the professional development and assistance of the provisionally registered teacher.

GUIDELINES

  1. Teachers registered provisionally or subject to confirmation, either in a permanent or fixed-term position, will take part in an advice and guidance programme for up to two years, possibly longer, depending on their entitlements and their prior knowledge and experiences.


  1. Each PRT will have a proficient and experienced teacher who will act as his or her tutor teacher.


  1. Tutor teachers and their PRT will read and consider the guidelines in: Towards Full Registration – A support kit for Schools (2009).


  1. The tutor teacher will be responsible for overseeing the implementation of the structured advice and guidance programme in consultation with the PRT and in accordance with the Ministry of Education guidelines (2009).


  1. The most intensive support provided is normally during the first year of teaching.


  1. The tutor teacher and Year 1 PRT will consult over the implementation and use of the .2 allocated time during their first year. This will be documented.


  1. The tutor teacher and Year 1 PRT will meet weekly/fortnightly to discuss and implement the advice and guidance programme.  These meetings will be documented.


  1. The tutor teacher and Year 2 PRT will consult over the implementation and use of their release time allocated during their second year.  This will be documented.


  1. Tutor teachers and Year 2 PRT will meet fortnightly/monthly.  These meetings will be documented.



  1. The principal will receive a progress report at least twice a term. This will be placed on the PRT file. Tutor teachers will allocate time for their PRT to meet with the Principal, using their release time, at least once a term.
