LANGUAGE PROCEDURAL DOCUMENT

PR-2-12

PROCEDURAL DOCUMENT

Effective date: 10-April-2017

Rationale

Learning English encompasses learning the language, learning through the language and learning about the language in relevant, meaningful contexts.

Purpose

Success in English gives students access to the knowledge and skills they need in order to participate fully in the social, cultural, political, and economic life of New Zealand and the wider world. Students who understand how language works will be equipped to make appropriate and systematic language choices in a range of contexts.

Plateau School structures the teaching of English around two strands, each encompassing the oral, written, and visual forms of the language.

The strands are:

  • Making meaning of ideas or information they receive (listening, reading, viewing)
  • Creating meaning for themselves or others (speaking, writing, presenting).

Assessment

Refer to the Planning and Assessment Procedural Document (PR-2-3).

Conclusion

By engaging in text, image and oral based learning activities, students become increasingly skilled and sophisticated speakers, listeners, writers, readers, presenters and viewers.
